My Oprah Show Experience January 15, 2010

Filed under: General — Stacy Gardner, The Intelligence Agent @ 7:25 PM

Hello, and Happy Friday!

On Wednesday 1/14, I had the opportunity to attend a taping of the Oprah show.  It was quite the experience, and a very interesting topic.

The topic was Marriages Around the World.  The show focused on marriage culture in Denmark, Egypt and India.  Guests for each location were via satellite.  Some interesting things I learned about each:

Denmark

-          People usually don’t get married

-          You never get married unless you live together for a while

Egypt

-          It’s taboo to live with your boyfriend before marriage

-          1 in every 2 marriages end in divorce

-          If you get a divorce, the woman usually moves back in with her parents

-          Some people wear a scarf for religion, others for culture

-          You could only get a divorce for the past 10 years

-          If the man wants a divorce, all he has to say is “I want a divorce” 3 times.  If a woman wants a divorce she has to go to court

India

-          90% of women are married through an arranged marriage

-          One woman from the audience was married 6 days after her parents and her in-laws met to see if they were a match.  She never met her husband until her wedding day!  That was 21 years ago.

-          Now women in India do have a choice to get married through an arranged marriage or by their own selection

A mail order bride from Ukraine (Lera) with her husband were live guests on the show.  She wanted to get a green card and leave Ukraine to come to the US, so she posted her profile on a mail order bride site.  A guy from NY was lonely after 9/11 and went on the site she was on.  They started to chat, and eventually they got married and she came to NY to live with him.

Also, there was a segment on Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love.  Once she got divorced, she said she would never get married.  Then she met someone and that changed.  She talks about it in her new book, Committed. I’ve got some reading to do.

Post show the topic moved from marriages and got focused on why women wear scarves. To me it seemed a little off the marriage topic, but it was still interesting.  Click here if you want to see it online: http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Marriage-Around-the-World-Continues-After-the-Show-Video

Also, 2 audience members from Ukraine were highly upset that when video of Ukraine was shown, it seemed dark, rundown and not the place to live.  There was a debate about it and included in this is where one of them says a very rude comment about where Lera use to live. I was shocked!  http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Women-Around-the-World-Debate-their-Differences-Video

The show definitely got more raw after the hour was up.  I  had the possible chance of attending the taping of the next show that day, but one show was enough.  Last minute reservations on Oprah’s website is the way I got tickets.  You never know unless you try!
